Symposium marks Medjugorje’s 30 years

A wealth of theologians, historians, sociologists and psychologists were at the podium on Wednesday when “Thirty Years of Medjugorje”, an international scientific symposium, celebrated the anniversary of the apparitions. All 20 lectures to be published later this year.

Parishioners and pilgrims were invited but in a special way the local guides were summoned when the parish office of Medjugorje and the editors of the scientific bulletin Herzegovina Franciscana joined forces with an international symposium in Medjugorje on October 5.

The 20 lecturers were theologians, psychologists, historians and sociologists each of whom had 10-12 minutes for his lecture. All the entries are planned to be compiled in a special edition of Herzegovina Franciscana expected for Christmas.

Hubert Liebherr - coordinator of the first Peace March, an anniversary tradition in Medjugorje since 1992

In terms of subjects, the lectures spanned widely: Dr. Ivica Sarac talked about the social and political circumstances during the first years of the apparitions. Dr. Fr. Ivan Dugandzic covered the official investigations of the apparitions from 1982 until the present Vatican Commission. Prof. Fr. Eduard Pericic lectured on how, throughout the world, Medjugorje has become a trademark of Croatia.

Thomas Muller and Hubert Liebherr represented the lay people with talks about the role of common church-goers’ reactions in validating claims of apparitions (the so-called sensus fidelium criteria), and about how Medjugorje has inspired prayer groups to form throughout the world.
